Course Description

The STCW Basic Safety Training is a mandatory international certification for all seafarers. This course equips participants with essential knowledge and practical skills required to respond effectively to onboard emergencies, including fire, abandonment, medical incidents, and personal safety risks. The training is conducted in accordance with IMO standards and emphasizes hands-on exercises, simulations, and real-life emergency scenarios.

STCW 95 Basic Safety Training certificates are mandatory for all seafarers working on board ship.

There are four elements of the Basic Safety Training course:

STCW95 Personal Survival Techniques(Approval in progress)

STCW95 Fire Fighting and Fire Prevention(Approval in progress)

STCW95 Personal Safety & Social Responsibilities

STCW95 Elementary First Aid

Course Objectives

Respond effectively to fire and emergency situations onboard

Demonstrate survival techniques in water

Provide basic first aid

Understand personal safety responsibilities

Comply with international maritime safety standards

This course is suitable for:

Offshore workers

Marine crew

Oil & gas rig personnel

New seafarers

Prerequisites

There are no formal prerequisites for this course. However, participants should have:

Valid identification documents

Age should be 16 years or more.

Able to speak and write English, as the course will be conducted in English.

Course Content

Personal Survival Techniques

Understands the principle of sea survival & survival crafts life saving equipments carried aboard

Know the different type of life boats and survival techniques in sea water.

States the requirements for life boat for different type of ships.

Know the different type of Life Raft and dangers to survivors in survival craft.

Know the procedures to launch the life raft & life boat.

Understand & demonstrates the proper donning of L/jacket and able to jump into the water with life jacket on.

Know the SOLAS training manuals requirement & what to do when the abandon ship signal is made.

Know the action to take on arrival of rescue vessel or helicopter.

Fire Prevention & Fire Fighting

Theory of fire; properties of flammable material; fire prevention principle

Process of fire spreading; patrol system; fire hazards; fire fighting organization

Location of fire fighting appliances and emergency escape routes

Emergency fire pump; Chemical powder application

Preventing a fire from spreading; fire detection system; fire fighting appliances

Classification of fires; use of proper fire extinguisher

Personal Safety & Social Responsibility

Types of emergency which may occur, such as collision, fire & foundering

Knowledge of shipboard contingency plans for responses to emergencies

Emergency signals and specific duties allocated to crew members in the muster list; muster stations; correct use of personal safety equipment

Action to take on discovering potential emergency, including fire, collision, foundering and ingress of water into the ship

Action to take on gearing emergency alarm signals; value of training and drills

Knowledge of escape routes and internal communication and alarm systems

Effect of operational or accidental pollution of the marine environment

Basic environmental protection; importance of adhering to safe working practices at all times

Safety and protective devices to protect against potential hazards aboard ship

Precautions to be taken prior to entering enclosed spaces

Accident prevention and occupational health; importance of maintaining good

human working relationships aboard ship

Elementary First Aid

Body structures and functions.

Position the casualty; apply resuscitation techniques; control bleeding;

Apply appropriate measures of basic shock management

Apply appropriate measures in the event of burns and scalds, including accidents caused by electric current; Improvise bandages and use materials in emergency kit;

Rescue and transport of casualty.

Certificate

Certificates of completion accredited by United Arab Emirates Maritime Administration will be issued upon successful completion of the course and passing the written and practical test.
